One Year Together : Part 1 A Year of Growth, Education, and Bonding
As our one-year homecoming anniversary came and went, I’ve been reflecting on my journey with my first New Guinea singing dog, Aria. At the start of this adventure, I had a few goals and expectations in mind, but I couldn’t have imagined just how quickly and deeply I would bond with this little dog with a huge personality. Like any new experience, our first year together had its ups and downs, its wins and challenges, but I wouldn’t change a single thing about the journey we’ve shared.
When I first embarked on this path with Aria, many people told me I shouldn’t or couldn’t aim to accomplish what I had hoped. With so much misinformation circulating about New Guinea singing dogs, I encountered many voices focused on what they believed these dogs could not do. However, for every naysayer, there were also voices of encouragement—those who had walked this road before and firmly believed in what these dogs can achieve. It’s thanks to that supportive community and their advocacy that Aria and I are where we are today.
A Focus on Socialization
So, where are we now, and what have we accomplished over the past year? The biggest focus during Aria’s first year has been socialization—a cornerstone for any young dog’s development, but especially crucial for a premodern breed like the New Guinea singing dog.
Aria’s natural temperament is both aloof and curious, with an intelligence that shines through in everything she does. Recognizing this, I dedicated countless afternoons and evenings to helping her explore the world. We spent time in dog-friendly locations, attended a variety of classes—ranging from beginner obedience to scent work—and worked through her initial hesitations.
Through these experiences, Aria’s confidence blossomed. She began to embrace the world around her with cautious curiosity and even built friendships along the way. Our bond strengthened as she learned to trust me in unfamiliar environments. Watching her flourish in spaces where I was told she “wouldn’t” succeed has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Trials in Potty Training
Potty training was another area where Aria defied expectations, though not without its challenges. Contrary to what I’d read or been told, she caught on to the concept incredibly quickly. What I didn’t anticipate, however, was her strong dislike of rain and wet grass.
On rainy days, Aria would stubbornly refuse to step foot on the grass, only to have an accident indoors minutes later. It was a frustrating hurdle, but with consistency, patience, and training, we overcame it. These days, she confidently indicates when she needs to go outside—even during the rainiest weather.
Making Canine Friends
One of the more persistent myths about New Guinea singing dogs is that they can’t interact well with other dogs. Aria has been living proof that this isn’t always the case. Through carefully structured introductions and consistent training, she has learned to remain neutral around other dogs in various situations.
Classes like obedience and show handling helped her master focus and engagement in the presence of other dogs. Beyond neutrality, however, Aria has shown a remarkable ability to form bonds with her canine companions. She shares her home with two other dogs and has demonstrated exceptional skills in reading canine body language. Whether it’s knowing when to back off or when to initiate play, Aria has a knack for adapting to the needs of her four-legged friends.
Outside of her pack, Aria has also developed friendships with other dogs, including an initially timid Miniature Dachshund, a Mini Goldendoodle and a more forward Miniature Schnauzer. Watching her navigate these relationships has been a joy and a testament to her adaptability.
Educating the Public: Becoming a Breed Ambassador
One of the most unexpected and rewarding parts of this journey has been the opportunity to educate others about New Guinea singing dogs. Aria’s presence at street fairs, classes, and dog-friendly events has sparked countless conversations with curious onlookers. Many people have never heard of the breed, and others have misconceptions about their temperament and capabilities.
Through our interactions, I’ve been able to share accurate information about the breed’s history, unique traits, and potential as companions. Aria, with her striking appearance and neutral demeanor, has been the perfect ambassador, challenging stereotypes and showcasing what these dogs are capable of when given proper training and love.
Building this bridge between the public and the New Guinea singing dog community has been a privilege, and it’s a role I hope to continue in the years ahead.
Building a Bond Together
Perhaps the most profound lesson I’ve learned this year is how deeply New Guinea singing dogs bond with their families. Aria has quickly become my constant companion, whether we’re attending street fairs, running daily errands, or exploring new hiking trails. Her enthusiasm for any activity that allows her to engage with me and her environment is truly unmatched.
This year has been filled with small victories that have added up to something much greater. From completing Beginner 1 and 2 obedience classes to confidently navigating bustling street fairs as a breed ambassador, Aria has continuously surprised me with her willingness to rise to the occasion.
Every day, she defies the myths that surround her breed and proves what’s possible with patience, consistency, and love. As we step into the world of dog sports and explore new challenges, one thing remains constant: our bond.
This first year has been a testament to growth, education, and connection—for both of us. I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes us. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this blog, where I’ll highlight Aria’s accomplishments in scent work, trick training, conformation, and more!
